Castelmezzano, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, is located in the Basilicata region.

Historic center

The narrow and winding streets of the historic center create a fascinating labyrinth to explore. The houses are built directly on the rock, with stone walls that blend perfectly with the surrounding environment.

The numerous stairs and steep steps offer the opportunity to climb to the peaks above and enjoy breathtaking views. The Lucanian Dolomites, so-called for their resemblance to the famous Dolomites of the Alps, offer wild and suggestive landscapes, with peaks and ridges reaching the sky.

Things to do

Castelmezzano is also famous for the Flight of the Angel, a unique experience that allows you to fly between the rock spires suspended on a steel cable. This tourist attraction offers pure adrenaline and spectacular views, providing an unforgettable experience.

The village is surrounded by unspoiled nature, with numerous hiking trails that allow you to explore the surrounding mountains and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.

Places to visit

From a historical and cultural point of view, Castelmezzano offers several attractions. The Mother Church of Santa Maria, built in the 13th century, houses a 14th-century wooden statue depicting the Madonna with Child, a wooden altar in Baroque style, and a Holy Family by Girolamo Bresciano.

Also not to be missed is the chapel of Santa Maria, the rock church of the Madonna dell'Ascensione carved into the rocks, with an adjacent pre-Napoleonic cemetery, and the various noble palaces of the village, such as the Merlino, Parrella, Coiro, Paternò, Campagna palaces, and the vast ducal palace of the De Lerma family, the last lords of Castelmezzano.

Finally, it is possible to visit the remains of the Norman-Swabian fortress, with a narrow and steep staircase carved into the rock that leads to the highest point, from where you can admire the Basento Valley. Climbing those fifty steps with the falcons swirling above your head is an almost mystical experience.

Local dish

As for gastronomy, one of the typical dishes of the village is lamb with herbs and grilled kid with potatoes.

Conclusion

Castelmezzano is a fascinating place with a unique combination of history, nature, adventure, and gastronomy. It is a place to visit for those who want to immerse themselves in a suggestive environment and live unforgettable experiences.
