Castelbello Castle - Castelbello-Ciardes (BZ) - Lower Venosta Valley - Trentino-Alto Adige

Majestic castle on the left bank of the Adige, after several fires, today it is completely renovated... #tuttitaly

Castelbello Castle, in the province of Bolzano, is a fascinating place that tells the story and culture of the region. Its documented traces date back to 1238, when the von Montalban lords built it, faithful vassals of the counts of Tyrol. But let's not stop here, because the history of this castle is full of surprises!

After having been a judicial seat around 1300, the castle passed from hand to hand until it came to the counts of Hendl in 1531. This family renovated and expanded the court, giving it its current appearance.

But fate was not kind to this magnificent construction, as between 1813 and 1824, numerous fires destroyed it. Only part of the building was rebuilt as a home, while the rest remained in ruins.

But the story does not end here! After years of legal battles 1956, the Italian State purchased the castle for 31,068 lire. Finally, in 1995, a complete restoration brought the court back to its former glory.

Exploring the castle, you can admire its internal courtyard with a narrow plan and a segmental arch connecting the two parts of the building. The chapel, located on the first floor of the north wing, dates back to the 14th century and features frescoes depicting the Annunciation and the blessing of Christ surrounded by the symbols of the four Evangelists. There is no shortage of coats of arms of Tyrol and the Hendl family in the vault.

But a fascinating detail makes this fresco unique: instead of the traditional Dove of the Holy Spirit, here we can see two figures of Mary with the Child. A creative and original interpretation of the Trinity!

In the southern area of the castle, you can visit the old kitchen called "Alte Kuchl" and admire the inner courtyard. But the real surprise awaits you in the exhibition on the Via Claudia Augusta, the main Roman road that crossed the Val Venosta.

This exhibition will take you back in time, reliving the ancient grandeur of this vital communication route.

Castelbello Castle is a place that will immerse you in the history and culture of the region. Don't miss the opportunity to visit it and discover all its wonders!
