Castel Di Sangro (AQ) - Abruzzo

On the right bank of the Sangro River stands Castel di Sangro, an Italian town with 6 629 inhabitants. The river originates in the heart of the Abruzzo National Park. Before reaching the municipal area in the province of L'Aquila, it flows into Lake Barrea, an artificial basin formed in 1951. After crossing the territory of Castel di Sangro, the river ends its course by flowing into the Adriatic Sea.

Central municipality of the entire Alto Sangro area and seat of the Mountain Community of Alto Sangro and the Cinquemiglia Plateau, Castel di Sangro is also a thriving tourist center, much loved for its proximity to the districts of Rivisondoli, Pescocostanzo, and Roccaraso.

Piazza del Plebiscito is the heart of the city. Here stand the fountain of 1898 and the ancient Church of San Giovanni Battista, where the relics of San Felice are kept.

The city is embellished with religious architecture, including the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the main church of the town, inside which stands out the bronze group of the Baptism of Christ; the Church of Saints Crispino and Crispiniano, founded towards the end of the 16th century; the Church of the Madonna degli Eremiti, renovated two centuries after the earthquake of 1456 and again after the bombings of the Second World War, has an altar inside with the statue of the Madonna degli Eremiti.

Noteworthy are the ruins of the Medieval Castle, the Patiniana Art Gallery, and the Aufedinate Civic Museum. The latter is an archaeological museum where exhibitions on the history and traditions of the place are periodically set up.
