The Basilica of San Francesco is an essential religious building located in Piacenza. Built between 1278 and 1363, the church features a Lombard Gothic style and a facade made of terracotta. The work was commissioned by the Ghibelline Umbertino Landi and entrusted to the Franciscan Friars, who quickly completed the construction of the church and the adjacent monastery.
Over the centuries, the Basilica of San Francesco was enriched with numerous works of art, and the convent grew considerably.
One of the most important historical events related to the church occurred in 1848 when a referendum was held here, leading to the annexation of Piacenza to the Kingdom of Sardinia.
Inside the church, there are tombs of illustrious figures, paintings, sculptures, and remains of frescoes dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries.
One of the most significant works is the sculpture placed in the lunette of the portal, depicting the Stigmata of St. Francis and created around 1480. The Chapel of the Immaculate Dome was frescoed by Giovanni Battista Trotti, known as "Il Malosso," in 1600.
Also noteworthy is the stucco sculpture group created by Reti in the 17th century, depicting the Deposition.
This sculpture group represents an important example of Baroque art in the Basilica of San Francesco.
