Arezzo (AR) - Cathedral of Saints Peter and Donato - Tuscany

Arezzo, city of Oscar. Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni, born a few kilometers from here, in Misericordia, was filmed in the historic center... #tuttitaly

In addition to being the seat of one of the oldest universities in Tuscany and Europe, Arezzo boasts a vast naturalistic and artistic heritage.

Once in the city, we ran to the Duomo, famous for its frescoes by Piero della Francesca. Here, his Magdalene, painted in 1465, stands out, together with the stained glass windows by Guillaume de Marcillat.

The second stop was the heart of the medieval village, but we couldn't help but get lost in the middle of the various alleys and be amazed by the city's beauty. Once we arrive, however, we are speechless at the splendor that is revealed in front of us: an elegant square built in a steep climb, overlooked by churches, historic buildings, arcades, and ancient shops. Next to the Medieval Towers, we can admire the imposing Loggiato Vasariano, then the Palazzo della Fraternità dei Laici, and the apse of the Pieve di Santa Maria.

In the Basilica of San Domenico, the excellent Crucifix by Cimabue was painted between 1268 and 1271.

Every first weekend of the month, Piazza Grande is animated by a huge antique market, where more than 500 exhibitors sell objects of all kinds. Since 1968, La Fiera Antiquaria has never missed an appointment.

Another important event that characterizes Arezzo is the Giostra del Saracino, which takes place twice a year: the penultimate Saturday of June and the first Sunday of September.

The Giostra del Saracino is an ancient game of chivalry originating in the Middle Ages. It recalls the centuries-old struggle of Western Christianity to hinder the advance of the Muslims.

Remember that the film "La Vita è Bella" by Roberto Benigni was shot in the historic center of Arezzo.
