It is one of the few Elban fortresses ever conquered by Turkish pirates, and it is also the oldest fortification on the entire island of Elba... #tuttitaly
"You cannot go to Elba and not visit the Volterraio Fortress, the oldest fortification on the island." With this thought, we decided to give up the day at the beach and take the car to get near the Fortress.
Along the way, we find a pocket and stop to take the path through the woods. You cannot start this adventure without adequate sun protection, sneakers, and comfortable clothing, just as it is recommended to bring fresh water. Even two liters per person can be handy, especially in summer.
The path is medium easy, also suitable for children ... just be careful. Once out of the woods, we find ourselves walking on a mountain of an almost reddish color. The landscape is quite particular, and its indescribable charm. As we advance, a breathtaking panorama unfolds in front of us, including land and sea.
Arriving at our destination, we do not know from which angle to take the photos to do justice to the incomparable beauty of the place. From above, we can admire the panorama of the entire island.
The Fortress of Volterraio occupies a strategic position visible from almost every point of the island, guarding and defending the entire Elban territory. It is also one of the few Elba fortresses ever conquered by the Turkish pirates who, in their raids, raided Elba several times. And it is precisely between the mighty walls of Volterraio that, in the harsh sieges of 1544 and 1554, many Elbanians found refuge and asylum.
This seems to be the heart of Elba, and here we can still perceive its history.
