Villalago (AQ) - Church of Santa Maria di Loreto - One of the most beautiful villages in Italy - Abruzzo

The fortified village of ancient origins, nestled between the natural lake of Scanno and the artificial lake of San Domenico... #tuttitaly

In the 11th century, on the top of Monte Argoneta, between the fascinating artificial lake of S. Domenico and the mysterious natural lake of Scanno, stands Villalago. The name evokes the local presence of nine lakes, some of which have disappeared.

The historic center is awe-inspiring, with its narrow alleys, squares, and steps that give the idea of a theater. Along the streets, you can see many stone coats of arms on the doors of the houses, depicting animals, flowers, and faces.

You will find the parish church in the heart of the town, going up the steps from Piazza Celestino Lupi. It is presented in Abruzzese Romanesque style and preserves inside a canvas painting of 1521 depicting the Madonna del Rosario and the stone altar of San Domenico from the 12th century.

Don't forget to visit the hermitage of San Domenico, the most representative place in Villalago. This is a spiritual place where the anchorite lived around 1010.

The sanctuary rises like a gem set between rocks and waters of a beautiful emerald green. And it is precisely here that St. Dominic managed to find the peace he sought.

Also worth seeing is the Church of the Madonna Addolorata, incorporated into the palace of the Lupi family. The bell of San Domenico is kept in its bell tower.
