The origins of the municipality of Fontanafredda and its Vigonovo hamlet date back to the Imperial Roman age, as evidenced by numerous artifacts of the time found following the discovery of some tombs dating back to a few decades BC ... #tuttitaly
Vigonovo is the main fraction of Fontanafredda, an Italian municipality in Friuli Venezia Giulia, which until the end of the 18th century, was divided into three separate units. The municipal seat of Fontanafredda is located in Vigonovo, thus making it a scattered municipality.
We came across Vigonovo by chance, and the ancient parish church of Santa Maria, built in stone in the 19th century, attracted our attention.
The church houses paintings by A. Vicentino (1596), S. Fracchia, and G. De Lorenzi.
One of the most important religious buildings in the area was built on the Roman site. This is the Church of the Beata Vergine del Rosario, inside which there is a Baroque wooden high altar and a stout by an anonymous "tajapiera" from Meduno.
In the hamlet of Nave, on the other hand, we find the small church of S. Antonio, which in the past was a destination for pilgrimages to ask for "the miracle of rain." Most likely, the church was built on an ancient pagan place of worship of the water deities.
