Nicknamed the "land of love," it is a town of ancient origins that seems to be suspended in time, and its historic center is a succession of majestic buildings... #tuttitaly
Besides being one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Vico del Gargano has also been nicknamed the "land of love."
As evidence of its ancient origins, prehistoric settlements were discovered near the Umbra Forest and the site of an Iron Age necropolis on Tabor Hill, the point from which the inhabited center would later develop.
Initially, a colony of Slavs arrived from the eastern coasts of the Adriatic, who mingled with the residents of the village; Frederick II then conquered it in the 12th century. The king made it a hunting ground and favored its rebirth.
Today we find a characteristic historical center similar to a narrow streets and alleys labyrinth. One of the most evocative corners of the village is the famous "Vicolo del bacio": a small street no more than 50 cm wide and about 30 m long. To pass through, lovers are forced to touch each other.
It is one of the most romantic streets of Garganico and has its own Valentine's Day as its protector.
In the Vico area, there are about 80 springs. These irrigate the citrus groves, which, in addition to being the town's pride for several centuries, have also obtained the IGP guarantee mark for the quality of the native citrus fruits of the species "Orange Blonde of Gargano" and "Limone Femminello del Gargano."
