Today the valleys, with the function of expansion tanks, are used during floods to receive the waters of the lower Bolognese plain and then be subsequently discharged, via sewers and dewatering pumps, into the Reno river... #tuttitaly
The Argenta Valley is among the most extensive freshwater wetlands in northern Italy. An area of 1600 hectares includes the expansion basins of Campotto - Bassarone, Valle Santa, and the hygrophilous forest of Traversante.
Oasis of Campotto and Bassarone - a series of freshwater valleys interconnected and connected to the principal rivers of the area by canals.
Valle Santa, characterized by reed beds and water lily plants - is an ideal place for resting and nesting for various species of birds.
Bosco di Traversante - one of the last strips of hygrophilous forest in the Po Valley.
At the secretary's office of the Museo delle Valli, you can book a guided tour to explore the wetland area of Campotto - Bassarone and the Traversante wood on foot or by bike.
If you forget to book, you can still enjoy a walk in the Valle
Santa. The area is freely accessible, with cycle-pedestrian paths on grass. An observation tower allows for a bird's-eye view of both the expansion tank and the wet meadow and the species that stop or nest in these environments.
