Updated: 3 days ago

Right here, in 1961, stracciatella ice cream was born. The Venetian walls surrounding the Upper City (never besieged) have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017. Furthermore, Bergamo, like Rome, Cagliari, and very few other cities in the world, stands on seven hills... #tuttitaly

Upper Town - Medieval Village of Bergamo (BG) - UNESCO World Heritage Site - Lombardy

Bergamo, a city rich in history and architectural beauty, is located in Lombardy. Its Città Alta, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017, is one of the main tourist attractions in the region.

Bergamo's Città Alta is a true medieval gem, surrounded by ancient walls and dominated by the majestic Rocca. This castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains.

Must-see attractions

Porta Sant'Agostino, built in the 16th century, is one of the main entrances to the Città Alta. Surmounted by the Lion of Venice, the symbol of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, it represents an important historical landmark.

Among the main attractions of the Città Alta is the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a masterpiece of Romanesque and Renaissance architecture. Inside the basilica, you can admire frescoes and works of art of great historical value.

The Colleoni Chapel, located next to the basilica, is another architectural gem, with its richly decorated façade and the mausoleum of the condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni inside.

Curiosities

One of the curiosities related to Bergamo is that it was here, in 1961, that stracciatella ice cream was invented. This delicious gelato, made with a base of cream gelato and the addition of chocolate flakes, has become an icon of the Italian ice cream tradition.

Gastronomy

Bergamo's cuisine is characterized by traditional dishes such as polenta taragna, a dish made with cornmeal and cheese, and casoncelli, a typical stuffed pasta of the region. Local cheeses, such as Taleggio and Gorgonzola, are renowned worldwide.

Conclusion

A visit to Bergamo is an unforgettable experience. Its Città Alta, with its churches and castles, offers a journey into the past, while its gastronomy will delight even the most discerning palates.
