Umbertide, located in the upper Tiber Valley, has a characteristic historic center surrounded by medieval walls in the stretches that line the waterways. A wooden dam am of the bridge over the Tiber meters downstream barred the river's course and raised the water level to flood the entire moat around the walls.
According to tradition, the original name was Fratta and lent itself to remember the destruction of the previous Roman village, carried out by the Goths.
In 1863, the city was named in honor of Prince Umberto of Savoy.
The bronzes of Monte Acuto testify the first settlements of the 6th century BC, and the first historical documents on the city date back to 12 February 1189 when Umbertide was subjected to the jurisdiction of Perugia.
The Rocca stands in history today and is used as an exhibition center and center, which can be considered the symbol of Umbertide. Built between 1385 and 1389, it served as a district prison.
In 1984, it was renovated, and an entrance was created at the base of the walls of the left tower to connect the market square with Piazza Fortebraccio and, in this way, directly access the Teatro dei Riuniti. Since 1986, the Rocca has been used as a Center for Contemporary Art.
Noteworthy is the church of Santa Maria della Reggia, called Collegiata (16th century), and the Church of Santa Croce (1610), restored and transformed into a museum.
Also noteworthy are the church of San Bernardino (1556) and the church of Santa Maria della Pietà (1486).
The oldest in Umbertide, the Church of San Francesco (1299), was reopened to the public in 2005 after a careful, conservative restoration.
The Fratta nell'800 event takes place in September, with inhabitants dressed in period costumes and battle scenes from the Risorgimento. In the event's four days, taverns and inns are opened, set in the nineteenth century with menus of the time derived from original recipes.
