On top of a hill, in the historic center of Udine, stands the Castle. The building was erected starting from 1517 in place of a fortress destroyed by the earthquake in 1511. The external finishes and decorations of the Parliament Hall are the work of Giovanni da Udine, completed, after his death, by Francesco Floreani.Today, the castle is home to the Civic Museums.
In the clearing below the hill of the Castle stands Piazza Libertà, the oldest in Udine.
Overlooking the square are the Loggia del Lionello, the Loggia and Tempietto di San Giovanni, the Clock Tower, and the Bollani Arch, surmounted by the lion of San Marco.
Among the monuments, we can admire the Renaissance fountain of Carrara, the column with the lion of St. Mark of the Serenissima, the column with the statue of justice, the seventeenth-century statues of Hercules and Cacus, and the monument of Peace.
Piazza Libertà is known as the most beautiful Venetian-style square on the mainland.
