Troy (FG) - Church of San Francesco - Puglia

Troia, located in the province of Foggia, in the region of Puglia, is a city with a millennial history. Founded to become a stronghold of the Byzantine Empire, today it preserves ancient and invaluable treasures.

According to legend, the origins of Troia date back to ancient times and are attributed to Diomedes, a Greek hero of the Trojan War. The city is located on the first hills of the Daunian Apennines and was chosen as a settlement by the inhabitants of the ancient city of Aecae, destroyed in 662 by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine.

One of Troia's main points of interest is its famous Cathedral, renowned for its splendid embroidered rose window.

The construction of the Romanesque-Puglian-style cathedral began in 1093, and the exterior and interior display evocative motifs. The facade, characterized by elegant simplicity, features a wealth of details in the upper part, where a majestic eleven-rayed rose window, unique of its kind, is located. The central bronze door, created by Odorisio da Benevento in 1119, is another element of great artistic value.

In the cathedral, with its three aisles, twelve columns depict the twelve Apostles. On the other hand, the Church of San Francesco features a Baroque style and was expanded with the annexed convent by the friars of Montevergine in 1737. The interior, with a bright and rational single nave, is dominated by the color white and stuccos in the cornices. The 18th-century Neapolitan school marble altars, placed in the blind arches, are another testimony to the art present in the city.

Troia is a city that also offers other tourist attractions, such as castles and panoramic points that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Furthermore, the local gastronomy is renowned for its traditional dishes, which include specialties based on meat and typical products of the Puglia region.
