Treviso (TV) - The most frescoed city in Italy - Church of San Leonardo (Santa Rita) - Veneto

Treviso is located in the Veneto region, just 3 km from Antonio Canova airport, the closest.

What to visit

Treviso deserves to be discovered calmly, without being in a hurry, allowing yourself to be enchanted step by step by views made unique by the meeting of the water with the splendid frescoed buildings.

"The most frescoed city in Italy," as Giuseppe Mazzotti defined it.

The heart of the city beats between the Duomo, Piazza dei Signori, the Pescheria Island, and the Buranelli Canal.

The Isola della Pescheria has hosted the fish market for

more than 158 years; the Buranelli canal is one of the most picturesque branches of the Botteniga, which enters the city passing under the Ponte de Pria, the one leaning against the walls.

We enter the city center through Porta San Tommaso, above which stands the statue of St. Paul. The door is entirely covered with decorative elements in Istrian stone. Note, on the external front, in the center, is the lion of San Marco.

A few steps from Porta San Tommaso, we meet the Temple

of San Francesco, which houses the tombs of Pietro Alighieri and Francesca Petrarca, sons of Dante Alighieri and Francesco Petrarca.

The principal place of worship in Treviso is the Cathedral of San Pietro (Duomo), whose origins date back to the 6th century. The building was built around 1770 based on a project by the castle architect Giordano Ricatti.

The monumental Temple of San Nicolò, built in the early

16th century by the Dominicans, is the largest church in the city. An important cycle of frescoes by Tomaso da Modena is conserved in the adjoining convent complex.

Piazza dei Signori is Treviso's cultural, historical, and social center, where the Palazzo dei Trecento (12th century), the Palazzo del Podestà (late 15th century), and the Torre Civica with its 48 m high stand.

Under the loggia of the Palazzo dei Trecento is the

fountain of the tits, once located in the street Calmaggiore.

The Fountain of the tits is an ancient fountain that, under the domination of the Republic of Venice, tapped white and red wine during special celebrations.

In 1989 a copy of the original sculpture was made and placed in the courtyard of Palazzo Zignoli.

Gastronomy

Rice is one of the main dishes of Treviso cuisine. It is accompanied by various condiments, from meat to fish, vegetables to wild herbs. To taste the risotto al tajo with eel drums and freshwater prawns.

An ancient typical Treviso dish is sopa coada, a dry-textured pie in which layers of boned meat alternate with stale bread.
