So much so that in summer, this small town surrounded by pine forests completely changes its appearance due to numerous tourists attracted by the incomparable beauty of its sea.
During the summer, its population goes from a few hundred to over 50,000 inhabitants, almost all tourists looking for fun and relaxation. In a few years, it was transformed from a small fishing village into a lively seaside resort with a tourist vocation, one of the most popular in southern Salento from June to September.

Along the rocky coast of Torre San Giovanni is the Island of Pazze, which, legend has it, takes its name from the peace treaty (Pax) stipulated on the island between the Messapi and Taranto, which sanctioned peace between the Greeks of Taranto and the Messapians of Ugento.
Another legend tells that Pirro, king of Epirus, rushing to help Taranto in the war against Rome, ran aground with the whole fleet in the dreaded "Ugentine Shoals" reported on all nautical charts, which since then became the " Shoals of Pyrrhus. "
