The ancient history of this beautiful town begins in the Middle Ages. Its fortune is linked to its proximity to the great Tagliamento River. Rich in works of art, today it also houses one of the most essential and famous schools in the world: the Mosaic School of Friuli... #tuttitaly
On the right bank of the Tagliamento, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, stands the beautiful town of Spilimbergo.
Spilimbergo is known worldwide as the "City of Mosaics," thanks also to the presence of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, established in 1922.
What to visit
The visit to the city can start from the Western Tower, on whose external façade we can observe the fresco of a Marcian lion.
Corso Roma crosses the historic center from here until it reaches Piazza Duomo, overlooked by the Duomo, Palazzo de Daziaro, and Palazzo della Loggia. The latter presents the length formerly used in commercial exchanges on one of the columns.
The little church of Santa Cecilia is attached to the cathedral.
At the end of the square, a bridge that crosses the ancient moat leads to the Castle of Spilimbergo.
The building was rebuilt in Renaissance style after the fire of 1511. Inside, the Palazzo Dipinto and Palazzo Tadea are of significant impact.
Spilimbergo dessert
In addition to the frescoed historic buildings, Corso Roma overlooks several pastry shops, where it is worth stopping to taste the "Spilimbergo dessert," a light and refined puff pastry dessert with a soft and fragrant heart of almonds.
