A few kilometers from Polcenigo is the Gorgazzo Spring, an essential site in Friuli, whose extraordinary colors have inspired numerous artists, including Luigi Nono, who painted "The Gorgazzo Springs" in 1872, one of his most famous paintings.
The source of the Gorgazzo is an underwater cave where the stream of the same name originates, a tributary of the Livenza River.
The cave consists of a resurgence, one of the deepest ever explored in the world and the second deepest siphon karst spring in Europe. In 2019, the Polish cave diver Krzysztof Starnawski reached a depth of -222 m, also making a 3D map of the cavity.
To our great surprise, we could see the statue of Christ placed near the mouth of the cavity.
We have learned that at Christmas, the figure is taken, cleaned, and put back in its place to be part of a suggestive underwater nativity scene.
Right next to the source, we notice an inviting kiosk which we approach to buy some honey. This made our trip even more enjoyable.
We tasted the delicious linden honey and ended our exploration with a tasty apple brûlé and waffles with crunchy hazelnuts. An excellent way to start the day!
