Between the Tanagro valley and the Alburni mountains, Sicignano degli Alburni rises at 610 m above sea level. With an area of ​​approximately 80 km², the municipality has 3225 inhabitants. The population is mainly dedicated to agriculture, crafts, and livestock, followed by trade and services.


The toponym "Sicignano" appeared for the first time on a Roman epigraph of the Constantinian age in 323 AD. Today the epigraph is walled up in the Castle of Buccino.

Some excavations, which have brought to light a Roman necropolis, testify to the Roman origins of Sicignano, which date back to 450 BC—the castle's construction, which belonged to dates back to the Lombard age. After the fall of the Roman Empire and the invasions of foreign peoples, the inhabitants moved to the hills to defend themselves. In 1806 Sicignano was destroyed by the French. These, however, had inhabitants that tried to block its advance. The battle occurred in the locality known today as "Acqua della Battaglia." Ferdinand IV of Bourbon rebuilt the town.


Only in 1928, the name of the Alburni was added to the name of Sicignano. The municipality is part of the Alburni mountain community.
