Overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the province of Ancona, Senigallia is one of the most sought-after centers of seaside tourism. With its 14 km of soft golden sand, called velvet beach, the city offers its guests more than 100 accommodation facilities, including hotels and campsites.
The FEE has awarded the city the recognition of the Blue Flag for the high-quality standard regarding the cleanliness of the water, the environmental quality, and the services provided to tourists.
The vast shoreline and shallow water make the sea of Senigallia particularly suitable for families with children.
What to visit
The visit to the city can start with the Rocca Roveresca, made extremely spectacular by a mixture of architectural styles.
From the Rocca terrace: Piazza del Duca, the Palazzo del Duca, the Fountain of the Ducks, or the Lions.
Passing under the Portici Ercolani, you arrive at the Foro
Annonario dating back to 1834. A circular entrance characterizes the Forum with 24 columns in the Doric style.
The majestic Parish Cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo houses essential pictorial and sculptural works.
During the excavations for the construction of the new Teatro La Fenice, numerous finds from the Roman age emerged, which can be admired under the theater itself in the La Fenice Archaeological Area.
Curiosity
In 1792, Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti was born in Senigallia and became Pope in 1846 with the name of Pius IX. His pontificate lasted until 1878.
In the city's historic center is the Pius IX house museum at Palazzo Mastai Ferretti, which houses various objects related to the Pope's life. The Pope was beatified in 2000 by John Paul II.
On the table
Senigallia is a set of flavors and aromas that reflect the ancient culinary tradition of the Marche region. Genuine, simple dishes go well with the high quality of blue fish and the harmony of Verdicchio. A good Lacrima di Morro d'Alba should accompany the tasty porchetta; also delicious: the brodetto, the vincisgrassi, the cannelloni.
