Sant'Annapelago, hamlet of Pievepelago (MO) - Parish Church - Emilia Romagna

In the upper Pelago Valley near the ridge of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines stands Sant'Annapelago, in the province of Modena, 56 km from Pisa Galileo Galilei airport (PSA), the closest.

Sant'Anna Pelago is a lively winter and summer tourist center at 1170 m in the heart of Frignano Park.

The town has some renowned lifts and a ski area surrounded by splendid panoramas.

Ski and snowboard lovers will find a ski lift and two

connected two-seater ski lifts to reach the 1700 m altitude of Monte Albano, where the slopes are suitable for various levels of preparation.

In 2007 a Nordic ski slope was built, which can also be used at night. The track crosses the village and extends for 3 km.

Events and parties

Each year begins with the Epiphany Masquerade, which takes place on January 5 and consists of a traditional parade of masked characters. This event is one of the most original and oldest in Modena Apennines.

Sant'Anna is celebrated on 26 July, a religious festival strongly linked to the cultural tradition of the town.

For the Porcini Mushroom Festival in September, the

competition is open to all and rewards the heaviest porcini mushroom.

Curiosity

The inhabitants of Sant'Annapelago spend a lot of time in the taverns; their popular custom is to order a "Cagnetta" at the counter: light beer is served in a tavern glass (220 ml) to drink less alcohol, but at the same time always have the glass half full.

Legend

In the legend of Sant'Annapelago, the protagonist is love, as in every famous story, linked to death and tragedy.

These are two young people "so much in love that their love was said to have cheered up every inhabitant of the locality." Yet on their wedding day, the groom was transformed into a towering pine tree and the bride into a stream of water that would forever nourish the tree. (source: modenatoday)
