Situated at an altitude of 1270 meters, the picturesque medieval village of Étroubles is located in the Gran San Bernardo valley, surrounded by lush woods and green pastures. Known since Roman times as Restopolis, this tranquil village is an important hub of the ancient Via delle Gallie, which led to the present-day Colle del Gran San Bernardo.
Over the centuries, Étroubles has also been part of the historic Via Francigena, a pilgrimage route that connects the British Isles to Rome and Jerusalem, still traveled today by many pilgrims. In 2010, the village received the prestigious Orange Flag award from the Italian Touring Club, a recognition that certifies the quality of its historic center and environmental management of the territory.
What to See in Étroubles
Étroubles is a true open-air museum, where contemporary art harmoniously interacts with tradition. The cobblestone streets are dotted with works of art thanks to the collaboration with the Fondation Gianadda in Martigny. As you walk among ancient stone houses with slate roofs and charming fountains, you will also come across the Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta, rebuilt in the 19th century, which houses a small museum with liturgical artifacts from the 15th century.
