According to tradition, this is the exact place where the young Giannetta de' Vacchi would have witnessed the first apparition of the Madonna, who, as proof of her divine origin, would have caused a spring of water to flow from the ground... #tuttitaly
The Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Fonte, located in Caravaggio, in the Bergamo province, is of great historical and religious importance.
Built in the 15th century, the sanctuary was rebuilt over the centuries, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, thanks to the work of the architect Pellegrino Tibaldi.
The sanctuary is a destination for numerous pilgrimages, especially on May 26th, when the miraculous apparition is celebrated. Every year, over two million pilgrims visit the monastery, walking along a charming tree-lined avenue that leads to the main building.
Inside the sanctuary, you can admire works of art by influential artists such as Juvarra, Cavenaghi, Moriggia, and Cavedone. These works contribute to creating an atmosphere of incredible beauty and spirituality.
The focal point of the sanctuary is the Sacred Fountain, which is located beneath the main altar.
In 1432, a young woman had a vision of the Madonna in this place, and at the same time, a clear water spring began to gush from the ground.
Even today, the Sacred Fountain is the center of attention for visitors who can draw water from this spring. The spring also feeds two large basins in the access square, surrounded by arcades where visitors can pause and reflect.
The Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Fonte is a place of great devotion, spirituality, and artistic and scenic beauty. Its thousand-year history and works of art make it a must-visit destination for those visiting the Bergamo region.
