Salò (BS) - Church of San Bernardino da Siena - Lake Garda - Lombardy

Salò is a charming city located on Lake Garda in the province of Brescia, with a rich and meaningful history.

Origin of the name

The name of the city has several possible origins. Some sources connect it to the name of an Etruscan queen called Salodia; others trace it back to a lucumone named Saloo. In contrast, others link it to the Latin term "salodium," which referred to the rooms and halls of the lakeside villas in Roman times.

A plausible explanation is that the name Salò derives from the fact that the city was the economic capital of the area even in ancient times, where sea salt was deposited.

Salò was connected to the Adriatic Sea through the rivers Mincio and Po, allowing for the transportation of sea salt cultivated in the Adriatic salt pans.

Furthermore, the area may have been used to heal wounded or sick soldiers during the Alpine conquest of the Roman legions, deriving the toponym from the Latin term "salus," which means "health."

What to visit

Salò boasts a beautiful lakeside promenade where two historic palaces can be admired: the Palazzo della Magnifica Patria and the Palazzo del Podestà.

These palaces testify to the city's noble history and currently house the municipal offices. In the atrium of the Palazzo della Magnifica Patria, one can admire the frescoes by Angelo Landi. Ancient coats of arms and commemorative plaques connect the two palaces under the entrance.

The Church of San Bernardino da Siena is worth a visit. The church features a plan illuminated by eight windows that spread colored light over the single nave. Visitors can admire frescoes, artworks, and an altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Child in Glory with Saints.

Things to do in Salò

Salò offers many activities for visitors. The Saturday morning market is trendy, especially among foreign tourists, and covers a large area. Taking boat trips, ferries, or motorboats to reach other beautiful locations on Lake Garda for a day trip is possible.

Furthermore, Salò offers beaches along the entire gulf, where one can sunbathe, swim in the lake, and enjoy a drink on the beach. The city also offers beautiful walks or bike rides along trails and cycle paths. There is also a Sailing School for sailing enthusiasts that provides lessons for sailors of all ages.

Conclusion

Salò is a city that offers a unique combination of history, natural beauty, and cultural attractions. It is a place not to be missed during a visit to Lake Garda.
