Roccastrada (GR) - Tuscany

Roccastrada is a charming village located on a base of magmatic rock, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding plain and Mount Amiata.

Historical background

This picturesque village is situated in the park of the Grosseto Metalliferous Hills in northern Maremma.

During the Middle Ages, Roccastrada was a critical silver and copper mining center ruled by the powerful Aldobrandeschi family until the early 14th century. Later, the town came under Siena's control and then the Medici family's protection in 1555.

Places to visit

The historic center of Roccastrada still preserves the Church of San Niccolò, dating back to the 13th century. New settlement areas have developed around the historic center, including the new center. You can find the Town Hall with its Library, the Teatro dei Concordi, and the large Chiusone Park here.

The only access to the village is through the Porta del Madonnino, which retains its original medieval features despite extensive restoration work that has limited its readability.

This gate is located in the southwestern part of the town, between Vicolo Basso and Piazzetta dell'Incrociata.

Conclusion

Roccastrada is a place rich in history and offers numerous tourist attractions. In addition to the Church of San Niccolò and the Porta del Madonnino, visitors can admire the picturesque views of the surrounding countryside and go hiking on Mount Amiata.

Furthermore, the town is famous for its gastronomy, with traditional dishes that include specialties made with wild boar and mushrooms.
