Rocca Imperiale (CS) - One of the most beautiful villages in Italy - Calabria

Rocca Imperiale, located in the province of Cosenza, is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. This charming village is dominated by the majestic Castle of Rocca Imperiale, built by Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century. The castle stands imposingly over the underlying village, with its characteristic stepped houses.

The place's original name was Castrum Carcari, which referred to the lime kilns in the area. This could suggest the presence of a pre-existing Roman military outpost, as indicated by the tombs found in the Cesine area.

Rocca Imperiale is considered the gateway to Calabria from the Ionian Sea side. Over the centuries, the village has experienced various historical and cultural events. It is known to have been a place of inspiration for poets and artists and a location for films.

The initial settlements date back to the 8th century, but the village developed further with the construction of the Swabian castle. The imposing presence of the castle gives Rocca Imperiale a suggestive and unique atmosphere.

Furthermore, the town is famous for producing lemons, representing one of the area's primary agricultural resources.

Gastronomy

Rocca Imperiale also offers a rich gastronomic offer. The last Sunday of Carnival is celebrated with a masked parade and the "sagra delle maiatiche," fritters with dried peppers.

Among the traditional dishes of the place, you can taste "frizzul ca' millic" (macaroni with sauce and breadcrumbs), "laganelli" with chickpeas, roast kid and pork, fried peppers, and eggplants, "muffit" (puff pastry with pork cracklings), and lemon cake.
