The Basilica of San Nicolò in Lecco is a true historical treasure. Built in the 11th century, it has gone through the centuries undergoing expansions, restorations, and transformations that have enriched its beauty.

In the fifteenth century, a vital restoration work brought the basilica back to life, while in the sixteenth century, it suffered damage and destruction. But in the seventeenth century, the basilica experienced a true rebirth, taking on a fascinating baroque style in its structures, furnishings, and decorations.

The architect Giuseppe Bovara, between 1831 and 1862, gave the building the neoclassical appearance we admire today. But the real surprise came in 1902-1904, when the neo-Gothic style bell tower, designed by Giovanni Ceruti, was added. This bell tower was grafted onto one of the towers of the ancient medieval walls of the city, which, unfortunately, were demolished during the 19th century.

But it doesn't end here! In 1928, Giuseppe Amigoni re-adapted the original 17th-century double staircase, resting on a section of the medieval walls.

Entering the basilica, you find yourself immersed in a real art museum. Numerous wall paintings, created by famous artists active in Lecco and Brianza between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, adorn the church's walls.

To top it all, in 1942, the church was elevated to the rank of basilica, confirming its importance and its historical and artistic value. The Basilica of San Nicolò is truly a unique place, which contains centuries of history and art in a single architectural wonder.
