Portomaggiore stands on the banks of the Sandalo River, an extinct branch of the Po di Volano.
What to see
Noteworthy is the residence of the Estensi, called the Delizia Estense del Verginese. It is a two-story villa bounded at the top by four crenelated towers and connected via an eighteenth-century entrance to a private chapel.
At the rear are a Renaissance garden and a dovecote tower.
Near the delight, we find the Archaeological Museum: Il Sepolcreto dei Fadieni, which documents the discovery of a small Roman cemetery dating back to the 1st and 2nd century AD.
Finally, nature lovers can spend time in the Porto Trava
Oasis, strolling among the islets joined together by wooden bridges and admiring the splendid valley landscape.
