Cefalù, overlooking the clear Mediterranean Sea of Sicily, is a city that enchants visitors with its natural beauty and rich history. Among the numerous attractions this location offers, Spiaggia del Porto Vecchio is undoubtedly one of the most striking and fascinating places to visit.
Located near the old harbor of Cefalù, this beach, characterized by thin sand and crystal clear water, offers breathtaking sea views ranging from turquoise to azure, with harmoniously blended indigo shades. The historic houses' ancient retaining walls merge with the landscape's natural beauty, creating a picturesque and suggestive atmosphere.
Beyond the beach, Cefalù hides treasures that whisper its millennia-long history. One such gem is the medieval washhouse, a precious relic nestled on Via Vittorio Emanuele. This ancient public washhouse, accessed via a dramatic staircase of lava stone and limestone, is steeped in legend. It was once a bustling hub where washerwomen gathered to clean laundry, their songs and Sicilian cries echoing through the low vaults.
The washhouse's history is intertwined with that of the Cefalino River, which used to flow openly alongside it before being covered in the seventeenth century.
The washhouse was restored in 1991. The cast iron mouths, the lion heads, the low vaults, and the basins for scrubbing clothes are still intact, preserving the atmosphere of bygone times.
