For the army of Charles V passing through the Vallo di Diano, an imposing long table from Padula to Polla was organized by the locals... #tuttitaly
In the province of Salerno, Polla rises. The town is located south of the Vallo di Diano, between the mountain ranges of the Alburni to the west and the Maddalena to the east. It is also divided in two by the Tanagro River, which crosses its territory.
The first village arose around the 4th century BC. by the Lucanians, followed by the Romans. Before the year 1000, the area was inhabited by shepherds. These left traces of their passage in the caves, where human and animal remains have been found.
During Byzantine domination, the country was inhabited
by Greek populations. To testify its presence, the Greek rite professed in the Churches of Santa Maria dei Greci and San Nicola dei Greci and the rich costume women wore up to the beginning of the last century are suitable.
Among the noteworthy buildings, the following are worth a visit:
- the Churches of San Nicola dei Greci and San Nicola dei Latini, with their beautiful stone portals;
- the XII century Castle;
- the Franciscan convent of Sant'Antonio, rich in beautiful works of art;
- the Church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli;
- the Benedictine Church of San Pietro.
The municipality, which has a detached district (San Pietro) on state road 19, is the largest center of the area in which it is located.
