The Leaning Tower, a symbol of Pisa, is the best-known Italian monument in the world, thanks to the inclined structure due to subsidence in the ground, but also to its magnificent architecture of arches and loggias at the height of 56 meters..#UNESCO #tuttitaly
Pisa is a Tuscan city known worldwide for its Leaning Tower, which attracts tourists worldwide every year.
The Tower of Pisa symbolizes the city and the protagonist of the photos of the visitors. Do you see an image on social media where someone is trying to hold up a tower? Then they were in Pisa. A bit like the Milan Cathedral. How can you tell you've been to Milan if you don't take a picture of its magnificent Duomo? 😉
What to visit
Piazza del Duomo, or Piazza dei Miracoli, is the site of most significant tourist interest.
It looks like a "green cloud" on which monuments of great importance rise:
- The Pisa tower
- the Baptistery of San Giovanni
- the monumental cemetery
- the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
The poet D'Annunzio called these works "Miracles," hence the name of the square, a concentration of beauty included by UNESCO since 1987 in the list of World Heritage Sites.
The Leaning Tower is the bell tower of the Cathedral, built starting from 1173 on yielding ground.
The reason for so much fame is undoubtedly in the inclined structure of the Tower, but also its magnificent architecture made up of arches and loggias. Inside, 294 spiral steps lead to the top. From here, there is a spectacular view of the Duomo and the center of Pisa.
Less than a kilometer from the Tower is the Lungarnos of Pisa: the streets that line the Arno River, flanked by elegant palaces, shops, bars, and clubs. They are the places most frequented by the inhabitants.
Note: June 16 is a perfect date to visit the riversides: the Luminara di San Ranieri is held, and the natural light of hundreds of tiny flames enhances the area's beauty.
Piazza dei Cavalieri is the city's cultural heart: here is the prestigious Scuola Normale di Pisa, founded by Napoleon in 1810, following the example of the Parisian École.
The Normale is the oldest Italian university school. It promotes culture, teaching, and research in the humanities, mathematical and natural sciences, and social sciences.
In addition to the Scuola Normale, the square houses the Palazzo dell'Orologio, the Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri, and the Statue of Cosimo I.
Another place to explore is the Orto Botanico di Pisa, the oldest university botanical garden in the world.
It was founded in 1543 on the banks of the Arno and later moved to its current location. The park comprises about six thousand plants from all five continents.
Gastronomy
A typical Pisan dish is ossobuco accompanied by beans all'uccelletto.
