Pietrapertosa (PZ) - One of the mMin Italy - Convent of San Francesco - Basilicata

Pietrapertosa, in the province of Potenza, is a natural gem with unique rock formations. It is located in the Gallipoli Cognato and Dolomiti Lucane Park, offering a breathtaking panorama similar to the Dolomites.

At the town's entrance is a rock resembling a "forca caudina," an obligatory passage to enter the heart of Pietrapertosa. The houses rise like an amphitheater protected by the rocks.

Places to visit

The Arab quarter called the Arabata, looks like a lava flow of houses clinging to the rock walls, creating a small casbah-like atmosphere.

The Arabs settled here many centuries ago, living in stone houses connected by steep, winding streets.

The village of Pietrapertosa is enclosed between the main church and the Franciscan convent. The church, dedicated to San Giacomo Maggiore, has two aisles and exciting works of art. The convent, with its square cloister and central cistern, offers the opportunity to visit the garden and some rooms that once housed the monks.

In the village, several chapels testify to the deep religiosity of the peasant society. The castle, now in ruins, offers an incomparable panorama of rocks, sky, and rooftops.

Gastronomy

The gastronomy of Pietrapertosa offers traditional dishes celebrated during local festivals. During Carnival, you can taste the "rafanata," an omelet made with eggs, horseradish, and cheese.

In October, chestnuts take the spotlight, while on Santa Lucia's day, you can savor the "cuccia," a mixture of boiled wheat, chickpeas, and fava beans seasoned with a bit of salt.

Conclusion

Pietrapertosa is a charming place with a rich history. It is a paradise for nature, history, and art lovers.
