The territory of Pianoro extends along two valleys located on the Zena and Savena streams in Emilia-Romagna.
On the highest point, at a height of 638 m, stands Monte delle Formiche with the characteristic Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Zena, of medieval origins.
Monte delle Formiche owes its name to a curious phenomenon that occurred on the feast day of the Madonna: swarms of winged ants reached the summit and died here.
A not so rare phenomenon since the male ants, after mating, go to the places that stand out on the horizon and die there.
Near the Zena torrent, there is the homonymous Castle of medieval origins.
History
In the winter of 1944-45, the numerous bombings caused by the clash between the Germans and the Anglo-Americans destroyed Pianoro almost wholly.
Later, a monument was inaugurated in memory of the fallen, which became part of the UNESCO "Heritage for a Culture of Peace."
What to visit
The new town center, three kilometers from Pianoro Vecchio, was built in the 1950s. The construction of the parish church of Nostra Signora di Lourdes dates back to those years, replacing the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Riosto.
After the Second World War, the Sanctuary of Monte delle Formiche and the church of San Giovanni Battista in Livergnano were also restored.
Pianoro deserves a visit thanks to the numerous religious buildings and fascinating natural places such as Monte delle Formiche.
