Petina (SA) - Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park - UNESCO Heritage - Campania
The ancient village of Petina rises on the eastern slopes of the Alburni Mountains. In its territory, the cultivated fields contrast with stretches of semi-wooded areas alternating with uncultivated regions. The semi-wooded areas are rich in oak and sessile oak plants. At heights that reach even 1000 m, we find maple, white hornbeam, and chestnut.
The village overlooks the valley of Sant'Onofrio and still retains the characteristics of a small medieval town.
The highest point, called the Castle, is a modest fort
carved out of living rock, dating back to the 11th century.
In Massa, following the construction of the via ab Regio ad Capuam, also known as via Popilia or Annia or Popilia Lenate, built in 132 BC, several villas and a cemetery were built.
Behind the main square, Umberto I, which houses the
Parish Church dedicated to San Nicola di Bari and the Town Hall, we find the oldest part of the town. Going down a long avenue, you reach a small square in the center of which a stone cross was erected in 1577.
On one side of the cross is the coat of arms of the ancient University of Petina.
On the other side, we find the inscription: "Deo Optimo Maximo Universitate Ecclesia Sunt Erecta."
Festival
In spring, a festival dedicated to the typical product of the place takes place in the town: the wild strawberry.
