In the massif of the Alburni Mountains, there are the Pertosa-Auletta Caves, one of the focal sites of the "Cilento" Geopark.
The Pertosa-Auletta caves have two unique features:
- They are the only caves in Italy where it is possible to navigate an underground river, the Negro;
- they are the only ones in Europe to preserve the remains of a pile-dwelling village dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. (source: fondazionemida.com)
The caves branch out below Auletta and Polla. Their formation derives from tectonic phenomena, which formed for thousands of years thanks to the action of the waters coming from a conduit of the Tanagro River.
Visitable since 1932, the caves attract tens of thousands of tourists every year.
It is necessary to use a boat moved by a metal cable to reach its entrance.
Inside, events and performances are set up, which is suggestive thanks to the light projection systems.
