The parish church of the Beata Vergine delle Grazie is one of the most important churches in Udine. On April 12, 1495, the first stone of the Sanctuary was laid, which would have guarded a miraculous image of the Mother of God.
It is said that the icon initially belonged to the Venetian lieutenant Giovanni Emo, who kept it in his residence inside the Castle of Udine.
One day in 1479, a cook in the castle seriously injured her hand. He invoked the image of the Virgin, and as if by a miracle, he was healed. At that point, the lieutenant understood that the icon could no longer be kept in a profane place and decided to take it to the church located in Piazza 1 Maggio. According to tradition, on 8 September 1479, the image of the Madonna was accompanied in a procession from the castle to the church.
The Sanctuary was subsequently enlarged with the construction of the convent, the raising of the nave, and the addition of the pronaos in front of the façade, which rests on four massive columns.
Over time, the convent, the ceiling, and the church's side chapels were enriched with frescoes.
