Parish and Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo - Chiavenna (SO) - Valchiavenna - Lombardy

The Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo is a historic jewel in the heart of Chiavenna. Dating back to the 5th century, this church has undergone several transformations over the centuries but still retains its ancient Romanesque walls. Inside, the paintings created by the Como masters Filippo Fiori and Giovan Maria Giussani in 1759 add a touch of beauty and majesty.

The side chapels and the oratory of Santa Marta, with their altarpieces painted by artists such as Giuseppe Nuvolone, Alessandro Valdani di Chiasso, and Pietro Ligari, are a true feast for the eyes.

But it's not just the interior that deserves to be admired. The external facade of the church, with the date of 1538, reminds us of the reconstruction of the roof after a devastating fire—the bell tower in front of the church with the engraved verses of the poet Giovanni Bertacchi. The beautiful portico, built in the 17th century, not only bordered the lawn as a cemetery but also protected the sacred objects during processions in case of bad weather.

But the real surprise is found in the Treasure Museum. Here, you can admire works of inestimable value, such as the Crucifix of Santa Maria in Castello, a polychrome wooden work from the 14th century, and the Processional Cross of San Lorenzo, decorated with enamels and precious stones. Reliquaries, chalices, monstrances, and liturgical vestments testify to the sacred art and religious devotion that have characterized the history of Chiavenna and its community.

The visit to the Baptistery and the Treasure Museum is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and sacred art of Chiavenna, admiring the skill of the artisans who created these extraordinary works.
