On a rocky summit between the Tanagro valley and the mountain range of the Marzano-Eremita mountains stands Palomonte, a town of very ancient origins. The northern area of the municipal territory, characterized by a small plain, featured Lake Palo up until the 19th century (430 m above sea level and a perimeter of 8 km), which then dried up.
Places to visit
In the historic center of Palomonte, almost destroyed by the 1980 earthquake, is the former Franciscan Convent of the Padri dell'Osservanza, built around 1560. Noteworthy is its 17th-18th century cloister. In the refectory, some damaged frescoes represent the Last Supper and some holy faces of the Order.
At the top of the hill stands the extraordinary Mother of
Santa Croce Church, with an eighteenth-century facade and layout from the Aragonese era, considered one of the most beautiful monuments in the upper Sele Valley.
The church of Maria Santissima di Sperlonga is so-called because it was built near a cave. Some frescoes from around the 11th century have come to light depicting San Cosma, San Saba, and the remains of the ascension of the Madonna.
The Capuchin Convent, built between 1582 and 1602, with
a magnificent cloister and two beautiful chapels dedicated to Santa Maria degli Angeli and San Giuseppe, is the Town Hall.
Typical product
The taralli of Palomonte are produced artisanal, cooked in a wood-burning oven with white wine.
