Nettuno - Metropolitan City of Rome Capital - Sanctuary of Santa Maria Goretti - Lazio

Nettuno is one of the most famous and popular seaside resorts in Lazio... #tuttitaly

Tourist city in summer, Nettuno is one of Lazio's most popular seaside resorts. To make it famous are its numerous beaches that develop along the coast in the municipal area. There are also multiple accommodation facilities located in the urban core.

The medieval village is the beating heart of the tourist life of this city. It was built when Neptune was under the lordship of the Orsini and housed a series of monuments set among its narrow streets and suggestive squares.

Here we can admire historic buildings, such as the Baronial Palace, a symbol of feudal power, where the Colonna family once resided; the Palazzo Doria-Pamphilj, built-in 1600; the Collegiate Church of San Giovanni Battista, built in medieval times and completely rebuilt between 1738 and 1748.

In Nettuno stands the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora delle Grazie and of Santa Maria Goretti, the church that houses the body of the girl martyr of purity (1890-1902).

The building dated back to the 16th century and was built where a small church dedicated to the Annunciation stood. Tradition has it that the Statue of Our Lady of Grace landed on the shores of Neptune in 1550 on a ship from England.

In England, Catholic churches were confiscated at that time, and statues of saints were destroyed.

Thus, some sailors embarked on the figures of the Madonna Delle Grazie and other saints on a boat bound for Naples. The ship, however, due to a storm, landed in Neptune. This landing was interpreted as a sign of the will of the Madonna. Thus the simulacra of the Virgin, San Rocco, and San Sebastiano were placed in the then-small church of the Annunziata.
