Murano (VE) - Veneto

Murano is famous for the tradition of blown glass.

Life on this small island has revolved around the furnaces where glass objects have been made and sold worldwide for centuries.

In 1295, the Serenissima Republic of Venice transferred all the glass furnaces to the island of Murano to control and avoid disseminating information about the main glass handling techniques.

The glassmakers were forced to live on the island and could only leave Venice without a permit.

Murano has the shape of a small Venice: made up of nine small islands joined by bridges with the Grand Canal in the middle.

The island can be visited on foot, strolling among low-colored houses, bridges over the canals, and blown glass shops.

A visit to the Glass Museum is not to be missed.

Housed in the ancient Palazzo dei Vescovi di Torcello, the museum was founded to overcome the greatest crisis in

the sector that Venice has ever known, due to the beginning of the production of Swarovski crystals, the fall of the Republic and the years of foreign domination.

The museum includes many donations from the kiln owners who worked at the highest levels from the second half of the nineteenth century.

After 1923, the museum became part of the Venetian Civic Museums.

Later, an archaeological section was added, the most beautiful examples of which come from the necropolis of Enona.

The visit to the museum allows you to admire extraordinary masterpieces of glass art from the period of 300 to 900.
