Mondragone (CE) - Campania

Mondragone is a well-known seaside resort on the Volturno Riviera, which boasts an extensive sandy beach and a spa.

Legend

The origins of the name Mondragone range between history and legend. It is said that a very ferocious dragon defended a mountain. With his infectious breath, he was hidden in a mysterious cave, ready to kill anyone who approached the top of the hill.

History

In 375, the ancient Sinuessa, one of the wealthiest and most flourishing seaside towns in southern Italy in Roman times, was destroyed. Its inhabitants took refuge at the Fortress of Mondragone, located on a 417 m high hill, where possible enemy incursions could be observed.

It is said that the air in the area was genuinely unbreathable, which, over time, has intrigued various speleologists. It was discovered that the smell was due to the thermal springs of Mondragone, of sulfurous origin, much appreciated by the Romans, who founded the town.

According to some historical data, the Normans gave the city its name. In the 11th century, one of the rulers of the Rocca was a certain Drogone d'Altavilla who, when the city was besieged, took refuge there with all his family. The ancient fortress was identified as Montis Drogonis, and later, the underlying settlement became known as Mondragone.

What to see

A medieval appearance still characterizes the historic center.

In addition to the ruins of the Rocca, located on a hill from which you can admire the enchanting Gulf of Gaeta, the Palazzo Tarcagnota, built in the 18th century, is also worthy of note and has become one of the essential noble palaces in the whole of Mondragone.

Among the religious buildings, we can admire:

- the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Incaldana houses numerous works by local artists.

- the 13th century Church of San Michele extra Moenia, built outside the walls.

- the Chapel of the Carmine, of the XVIII century, which preserves inside a precious statue of the Madonna del Carmine.

Also not to be missed is the Torre (or Tomba) del Paladino, built on an ancient Roman mausoleum.

Gastronomy

Among the local products, we find buffalo mozzarella and Falerno wine.
