The uniqueness is, above all, the state of conservation of its beautiful decorations. The door is decorated with a lunette framed by plant motifs. At the center of the decoration is the depiction of Christ between the Archangels Michael and Gabriel..#UNESCO #tuttitaly
The Monastery of Santa Maria in Valle and the Lombard Temple were declared World Heritage Sites in 2011 within site "Italia Longobardorum. Places of power (568-774)". The site includes the Italian places that have preserved the most essential monumental and artistic testimonies of the Lombard period.
The age of Lombard's domination in Italy constituted a fundamental moment of transition between the classical and medieval worlds.
The assimilation of Roman and Byzantine architectural and decorative culture, translated into a new language, gave rise between the end of the seventh and eighth centuries to an artistic flourishing that spread from the urban courts to a large part of the peninsula.
The Monastery was born in the seventh century A.D. and was initially reserved for the Benedictine nuns. Later, the building underwent many additions and restorations primarily due to invasions and earthquakes that had seriously damaged it.
In 1841, the building was entrusted to the Ursuline nuns, who lived there until 1999.
The abbey is organized in an irregular shape. Thanks to its spaces and splendid views, it hosts many important events, including the International Courses of Music Improvement.
The entrance comprises round arches with cross vaults supported by circular stone columns.
In the Ursuline period, a large part of the monastery was not accessible except to the nuns as a secluded area. It is possible to explore the monastery spaces reserved for the cloister and the private rooms of the nuns. Being able to visit these places is quite suggestive—a truly unique sensation.
