Mirandola and Parish of Santa Maria Maggiore (MO) - Emilia Romagna

Mirandola is located in the province of Modena in Emilia Romagna, north of the capital, and has the title of city.

In the octagonal plan, the town still maintains traces of its Renaissance city-fortress structure.

From 1310 to 1711, Mirandola was the capital of the Signoria of the Pico family (among which Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, humanist and scientist of the fifteenth century, is known). Subsequently, the city passed under the dominion of the Este family.

Around Piazza Costituente, the central nucleus of the city

center, rise the buildings forming part of the large ancient complex of the Castello dei Pico, the Palazzo della Ragione in late Gothic style, the fifteenth-century Palazzo Bergomi and the Palazzo Comunale.

In 2012, Mirandola was hit by a series of violent earthquakes that damaged most buildings, including the Cathedral and the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore has an original late Gothic layout. Its bell tower is 48 m high. The interior had three naves with ribbed cross vaults and preserved valuable paintings, frescoes, and funerary monuments.

During the 2012 earthquake, the aisles and the roof completely collapsed. The bell tower is also unsafe.

The Church of San Francesco d'Assisi is one of the first Franciscan churches in Emilia, built a few years after the saint's canonization (1228).

Curiosity

Zampone was born in Mirandola.

During the siege of 1511 by the troops of Pope Julius II della Rovere, the citizens of Mirandola were starving, and only pigs remained in the city.

Since their meat would have perished quickly, the cook

proposed to Giovanni Pico: "Let's slaughter the animals and put the leanest meat in a casing formed by the skin of its legs. This way, it won't rot, and we could preserve it. To cook it longer come on". The idea was very successful. (source: www.modenatoday.it)
