Metropolitan City of Cagliari (CA) - Sardinia

Cagliari, the charming capital of Sardinia, rises on the Golfo degli Angeli.

The city, inhabited since the ancient Neolithic period, is rich in history and culture and embellished by verdant hills, glimpses of the sea, and the remains of thousands of antiquity.

The cemetery of Tuvixeddu, from the Punic age, and the Roman theater, dating back to the 2nd century, belong to the most ancient historical periods.

The city's medieval heart is the fortified district of Castello, home to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built in the first half of the 13th century.

The oldest complex on the island is the Basilica of San Santuario, built in Byzantine style around the 5th century.

The position overlooking the sea made Cagliari a coveted land of conquest.

The people who inhabited it were forced to create secret passages and hidden places under the ground.

Today we find several underground attractions that date back to Phoenician, Roman, and medieval times. Abandoned hospitals and tunnels have been found, including the Don Bosco tunnel, the air-raid shelter used during the bombings of the Second World War.

Local products

Among the typical products, we recall the delicious 'su casu cun s'axridda, a prized and ancient cheese produced through an ancient clay technique.
