Medieval Castle of Roccascalegna (CH) - Abruzzo

The Castle of Roccascalegna, located in the picturesque Abruzzo region, is steeped in history and legend. This majestic castle, built on a rocky spur, offers a breathtaking valley view. Its foundation dates back to the 9th century when the Abbey of S. Pancrazio made a lookout point to protect their possessions. Since then, the castle has undergone numerous changes and restorations but has maintained its medieval charm.

During the 15th century, the Annecchino Baronial family performed a significant restoration, giving the castle the appearance we admire today.

Five towers, one square and four circular, were part of its grandeur. However, during World War II, one of the circular towers was hit and demolished. Despite this loss, the Castle of Roccascalegna continues to enchant visitors with its grandeur and panoramic view.

But it is not only the history that makes this castle fascinating. A legend surrounds its ancient walls. In 1646, Baron Corvo De Corvis reinstated the practice of "Jus Primae Noctis," which obliged every newlywed bride to spend the first night of marriage with him.

However, a lovestruck husband, disguised as a bride, managed to kill the baron and throw him off the cliff. It is said that before falling, the baron left his bloodstain on the entrance tower, an indelible mark that has never been washed away despite attempts to do so. Even today, many locals claim to be able to see this bloodstain, a witness to passionate love and daring revenge.

Today, the Castle of Roccascalegna is open to the public, allowing everyone to immerse themselves in its fascinating history, explore its interior rooms, and admire the breathtaking view from the top of the rock. History and legend blend in this place, creating a unique visitor experience.
