Matelica (MC) - Marche

Matelica rises to 354 m above sea level in the Esino River valley. The territory, mainly hilly, is bordered by mountains.

The origin of the name Matelica is lost in the mists of time: in the world, there is no other place or city with this name, and very rare are those ending with the same ending.

The origins of the city date back to the Paleolithic: the Umbrians, an Indo-European population, had settled in 2000 BC. in the Esino river valley. The birth of the inhabited center dates back to the meeting of the Umbrian people with the Piceno ones.

The Piceni, a people from Abruzzo and Ascoli, built the

first inhabited center by exploiting the primitive settlements.

Matelica was the birthplace of one of the twentieth century's greatest authors: Libero Bigiaretti (1905-1993). The writer dedicated a beautiful story to the city, "the Feast of Sant'Adriano," inspired by his childhood and the fair in honor of the patron saint, held today, on 17 September.

Matelica is defined as the city of Enrico Mattei. Born in

Acqualagna, he spent his youth there before moving to Milan. He often returned, living in the house now known as Palazzo Mattei, located in the historic center.

In the historic center of Matelica, we find the Vicolo Orfanelle, the alley of the basciafemmine of female kissers. This attribute is because, being the tortuous way, it allows us to carry out these "operations" away from prying eyes.

For centuries the destination of many faithful, the Church

of Santa Maria Maddalena houses the body of Blessed Mattia Nazzarei, who lived between the XIII and XIV centuries. The nun was particularly sensitive to the problems of the sick and the poor and favored social peace.

Traditions

On their wedding day, it is the tradition of Matelica brides to place a bouquet in front of the ark, which holds the body of the Blessed, so that their union may receive blessing and protection.

For over a hundred years, the Good Friday procession has

been repeated, preceded, in the same afternoon, by the ceremony of the "Three Hours of Passion" held in the church of San Francesco.

Gastronomy

Preparing large and delicate white donuts on Easter is traditional, with a secret formula and sweet and cheese pizzas.

The same morning breakfast is ready to consume "omelet with mint" and "ciauscolo," as well as hard-boiled eggs and sweets.

During the harvest, must donuts are prepared.

As first courses, the tagliatelle, "li trozzapreti", lasagne, vincisgrassi, ravioli are much appreciated.

Among the wines, Verdicchio dominates.
