Lecce (LE) - Salento - Puglia

In addition to being one of the most beautiful art cities in Southern Italy, Lecce is also known as "the Florence of the South" and knows how to amaze and fascinate tourists and visitors. Its Messapian origins and the archaeological remains of the Roman domination mix with the vitality of the Baroque churches and palaces of the center.

We have seen architectural development, especially during the Kingdom of Naples. The center is open-air museums.

Furthermore, the facades enriched with decorations gave rise to the definition of "Lecce Baroque." An extraordinary style also for using Lecce stone, a type of calcareous material, easily modeled and with warm colors.

We can admire the following:

- the splendid Piazza del Duomo, which we find the Duomo, with a bell tower and two facades, one of which is sober and the other richly decorated;

- the bishop's palace, from the Renaissance period, with its magnificent loggia:

- the Palazzo del Seminario, with its rusticated facade and characteristic internal cloister.

Not far away is the famous Piazza Sant'Oronzo. This contains other artistic jewels, always belonging to different historical periods. The Palazzo del Seggio, known as the Sedile, dominates the square with its elegance. Today, it hosts exciting displays and exhibitions. The splendid church of Santa Maria Delle Grazie also sports the same style.

As evidence of Roman domination, we have the majestic Amphitheater, elliptical in shape, and the Roman column, with the bronze statue of the patron next to it.

Nearby we find the Church of San Giuseppe, with its baroque façade, and the Carlo V Castle, built in the 16th century. While it was once used for defensive purposes, it hosts numerous art exhibitions and cultural initiatives today.
