Piazzale Michelangelo - Panorama of Florence (FI) - UNESCO Heritage - Arno River - Tuscany
Situated on a hill south of Florence's historic center, Piazzale Michelangelo represents a thrilling fusion of art, architecture, and natural beauty. Designed by architect Giuseppe Poggi during the revitalized period when Florence was the capital of Italy, the square was created as part of an ambitious urban renewal project. Between 1869 and 1935, the city was enriched with riverside promenades and a charming panoramic road, now known as Viale dei Colli, which winds for eight kilometers to this magical terrace.
An iconic symbol of this square is a replica of Michelangelo's David, which was transported here in 1873 using nine pairs of oxen. This masterpiece, which dominates the center of the square, is accompanied by the four allegories of the Medici Chapels of San Lorenzo, making the place even more fascinating for art lovers. Although Poggi's original project also included a neoclassical loggia to be used as a museum of Michelangelo's works, this was never built, and today a panoramic restaurant stands in its place.
Piazzale Michelangelo is a must-see gathering place for both tourists and residents. The spectacular view of Florence and the Arno River offers one of the most enchanting sunsets in the city. Easily accessible, you can get here by car, using a dedicated parking lot, but the best options remain the bus (lines 12 and 13) or a pleasant walk that allows you to discover the city's hidden gems.
