Preceded only by Rome, Latina is the second largest city in Lazio with nearly 127,000 inhabitants, also thanks to its very extensive territory which includes numerous villages and municipalities with a vital beauty and history... #tuttitaly
Despite being one of the youngest cities in Italy, Latina is the second most populous city in Lazio, after Rome. Founded during the Fascist period, its birth was made official on 18 December 1932 with the name Littoria. However, Latina was appointed with the lieutenant decree of April 9, 1945.
The city's first project is Piazza del Quadrato, which symbolizes the transition from a rural village to a modern city.
As proof of this, we have the status of the arcades, the work of Egisto Caldana depicting agricultural themes, and the fountain in the center of the square, made by the Bolognese sculptor Pasquale Rizzoli, which represents the swamp freed from the waters; the Pontine Land Museum. The Museum is divided into five sections and traces the history of the 20th century, from the pre-reclamation to the rural transformation of the Agro Pontino.
The Piazza del Popolo houses the Town Hall and exhibits the Civic Tower and the fountain with the sphere, wholly covered with travertine.
The Piazza Della Libertà houses the Government Palace, where you can see inscriptions with texts by Pliny the Elder and Mussolini, coats of arms, and symbolic sculptures. In the center of the square, there is a fountain with two superimposed basins that receive water from bundles of ears of wheat.
In the city park, currently dedicated to Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, we can admire the War Memorial, a 15 m high monolith.
If, on the other hand, we want to admire the bronze lion donated by the city of Venice, we must go to the Piazza dei Bonificatori.
Another beautiful monument is Palazzo "M," whose central tower, which in the terminal part assumed the shape of an eagle, was destroyed during the war.
It is also lovely to visit the coast of Latina and trek on the Monte Sempervisa Ring, which allows you to reach the highest point of the Lepini Mountains and, from there, admire the entire Agro Pontino.
