Lanciano is a medieval town known for the Sanctuary of the Eucharistic Miracle, a destination for religious tourism.
The city is characterized by narrow streets full of historic shops, noble palaces, monuments, and churches that tell the town's story.
The historical center is in Piazza Plebiscito, where four districts develop: Lanciano Vecchio, Civitanova, Sacca, and Borgo.
Religious buildings
In the Civitanova district stands the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, dating back to the 13th century. Inside we can observe works of great value, such as the Cross by Nicola da Guardiagrele (1432), the urn of the body of San Donato as a child martyr, and the polyptych of the Madonna and Child by Gerolamo Galizzi.
In the 11th century, the ancient statue of the Madonna and Child, later called "Madonna del Ponte," was found in Piazza del Plebiscito.
To keep the icon, a chapel was built, which in the 14th century was enlarged to become a church.
To the left of the church, between 1610 and 1614, the Bell Tower was built.
The Church of San Francesco d'Assisi is famous for hosting the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano relics. It is said that around the eighth century, during a Holy Mass, a miracle occurred in the church of San Legonziano: the wafers and the wine were transformed into flesh and blood.
Since then, thousands of faithful have come here on pilgrimage every year.
Typical meal
Typical of the city of Lanciano is rintrocilo, egg pasta which, according to tradition, must be a single very long piece of spaghetti stretched out by hand.
